Swedish royal family introduces Princess Estelle!
Her Royal Highness Estelle Silvia Ewa Mary, Duchess of Ostergotland has been formally announced to the Swedish government today. HM King Carl XVI Gustaf revealed the name and dukedom in a special meeting of the cabinet held Friday. He couldn’t contain his excitement during the announcement saying:
“We have now been given a little Princess Estelle in Sweden and we are all, particularly me and the family, very, very happy and joyful for that.”
The name Estelle caught royal watchers by surprise, as it isn’t a widely used name in the royal family, but not new altogether. The origin is French and it was the name of Count Folke Bernadotte’s wife (the Count was the King’s godfather). The first two middle names obviously come from the baby’s grandmothers on both sides, but it is unknown if the usage of Mary is religious in nature, related to HRH Crown Princess Mary (a likely godmother), or just a name Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel liked. The Royal Court simplified things a bit in their statement as reported by AP: “The couple has chosen four names that they think are beautiful. Silvia and Ewa are of course after the grandmothers.
